The housing district of Hammarby Sjöstad, designed for 25 000 inhabitants and build in a former industrial area, is currently the world’s best application of the “sustainable city” concept. It attracts 5 000 foreign visitors every year and other water front cities such as Toronto and London, are following the suit. The integrated and environmentally managed infrastructure for water, energy and waste, contributes to Stockholm`s position as on of the world leaders in sustainable urban development. The district functions as a test bed for innovative energy technologies. Hydrogen fuel cells, solar panels, biogas production and use of underground waste collection systems are among the many innovations. The construction companies Skanska and NCC, the world leader in underground waste collection, Envac; the Scandinavian and British architects and environmental consultants, White, Tengbom, Sweco, ÅF and WSP are all represented in this spectacular city district.
Participants of the tour will see how a sustainable urban development strategy may influence the environmental performance, the quality of life and the growth of companies in the Hammarby Sjöstad.
